Sunfish Racing Groups

(Procedures for Determining Racing Sailing Groups)

These procedures apply to the Sunfish racers as needed. At the beginning of the season in September, all sailors planning to race in each series should communicate their intentions to the Race and Fleet Captains.

The Sunfish Captain and Statistician will assign each racer to one of the following three racing groups:

- **Luffers**: Sailors who are new to the fleet and have little to no sailing or racing experience in the type of boat they are sailing.

- **Salts**: Sailors with some racing experience and a general knowledge of racing rules.

- **Super Salts**: Sailors with a significant amount of racing experience and a good understanding of racing rules.

Sailors may remain in the same group for several seasons or move back and forth among the groups. An effort will be made to keep the number of active racers in each group balanced. Several factors determine the group assignment for each sailor each season, including:

- Performance throughout previous racing seasons (based on an individual’s race history rather than solely on final standings for a season).

- The number of racers needed in each group to ensure good balance. The list of assigned groups will be available for general review before the season's first race. Any challenges to these assignments will be heard by the Sunfish Captain between the season's first and second race dates.

*Note: The ITS division will participate in the fall series. In the winter series, it will be combined with the Luffer division.*
